New Zealand Pacific Scholarships (NZPS) provide the opportunity for individuals from targeted developing countries to undertake studies at tertiary education institutions in New Zealand. The purpose of the scholarships is for candidates to gain knowledge and skills in specific subject areas that will assist in the development of their home country by contributing to identified human resource development (HRD) training needs. Awardees are required to return to their home country for at least two years after the completion of their scholarship to apply these new skills and knowledge in government, civil society or private business organisations.

The objectives are to:

  • offer men and women with the ability to contribute to PNG’s fiscal and social development within the priority areas of National and provincial level governments;
  • enhance men and women with the skills and knowledge to contribute to PNG’s economic and social development within the private sector and civil society;
  • contribute to sustainable development and poverty reduction, humanitarian responses and protection of human rights;
  • seek to strengthen the human resource base of Papua New Guinea to build capability for sustainable and equitable development and independence.
