Australia Awards
ALA Fellowships

Australian Leadership Awards Fellowships are implemented by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) under the Australia Awards initiative. The Fellowships aim to develop leadership, address priority regional issues and build partnerships and linkages with developing countries.
Through the Australian Leadership Awards Fellowships, Australian organisations have the opportunity to build and strengthen links with organisations in Papua New Guinea and other countries, through short-term professional development placements, study or training in Australia.
Activities are expected to fall into two major classes:
- Professional attachment Fellowships: emphasis is placed on intensive management training, peer-to-peer learning, short term training, knowledge sharing, twinning, professional attachments, leadership and/or executive management training.
- Academic Fellowships: specialised research, seminars, short intensive professional programs and skills development.
Programs may be bilateral with Fellow(s) in counterpart organisations from Papua New Guinea or, multilateral with Fellows coming from counterpart organisations and countries across the region to work on a common issue.
Fellowships are ideal for funding collaborative arrangements between PNG senior specialists and their peers in Australian based organisations. Fellowships can incorporate public or private sector activities which have a sound development impact.
The Fellowships are also suited to specialist research organisations to enable PNG staff to work with research and private sector counterparts in Australia.
Australian organisations can apply for funding of up to AUD$35,000 per Fellow to support a range of short-term professional development activities in Australia that will develop expertise and leadership capacity.
AusAID is seeking submissions addressing priority development issues relating to
- disability
- economic growth
- education
- environment
- food security
- gender
- governance
- health
- human rights
- infrastructure
- regional stability
- rural development
- water and sanitation
Selection is competitive. Important criteria include strong linkages between the organisations and the potential of nominated Fellows to assume leadership roles and to influence policy reform and development outcomes.
Funding rounds are held bi-annually. Round 9 opened on 25 October 2010 with submissions closing at 5pm (AEST) on 1 December 2010. Round 10 will open in May 2011.
Scholarships PNG plays a role in putting PNG institutions in contact with Australian counterpart institutions to enable them to apply for Australian Leadership Awards Fellowships. Scholarships PNG also conducts occasional briefing sessions.
